International Symposium GEOKARsT 2009

Introduction

Karst terranes are among the most unique geological features and comprise a significant portion of the Earth’s crust. These areas have provided numerous geological and archeological evidences of the evolution of the life on Earth, and host natural resources and exotic lands upon which a large human population depends. These settings are also considered among the most vulnerable in the world to natural and/or man-induced hazards. For preservation and sustainable use of natural resources and protection of humans from risks within the karst areas a reliable and diverse understanding of Karst, through a multi-disciplinary approach combining expertise from different fields of geological sciences, is prerequisite.

From November 12 to 15, 2009 an international symposium on Geology, Natural Resources and Hazards in Karst Regions will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam. This symposium is dedicated to better understanding the geology, natural resources, natural and anthropogenic hazards in karst areas as well as wise use and sustainable management of karst areas. It will serve as an excellent opportunity to share experiences and to stimulate further co-operation between different fields of expertise in karst research from Vietnam and different areas of the world.
